Abstract: The three hundred-odd variables on this survey include a number covering the background of the respondent: age, sex, race, family background, religion, year of birth and degree, academic experience, publication record, education, salary level, department of affiliation, political preference, current research interest, success at acquiring research support, and recreational preference. Attitudinal variables deal with respondent's perception of self and his/her academic role (e.g., 'Do your interests lie primarily in teaching or in research?'); job satisfaction; general philosophy of higher education (e.g., 'This institution would be better off with fewer administrators' and 'Trustees' only responsibilities should be to raise money and gain community support.'); perceptions of their institution with regard to student satisfaction, academic standards, and student participation; departmental decision making; and political views on civil rights, Hippies, busing, and marijuana. Many of the questions are phrased to answer on a continuum of strongly agree, agree with reservations, disagree with reservations, and strongly disagree; interesting questions along this pattern include: 'Classified weapons research is a legitimate activity on college and university campuses,' and 'The female graduate students in my department are not as dedicated as the males.' Some questions are directed to campus demonstrations, particularly the Columbia Student revolt.
