Abstract: This study surveyed 900 American business leaders concerning their communications and attitudes on international trade. The survey was conducted in the spring of 1954, and a follow-up mail questionnaire was sent to the same respondents in the spring of 1955. Both surveys were sponsored by the Research Program in International Communication of the Center for International Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The 1954 survey was conducted for M.I.T. by the National Opinion Research Center. The 1955 follow-up was done by the staff of the Center for International Studies. The sample aimed at was 1,000 'heads of firms' (i.e., presidents, board chairmen, executive vice-presidents, or other top executive officers), of which the NORC succeeded in interviewing 903. The universe sampled was the Old Age and Survivors Insurance list, which contains all business enterprises in the United States with 100 or more employees.
