Abstract: This book is designed to aid in the application of discriminant analysis and related classification procedures to economic research. It can be used as an introduction and guide in the practical applications of the techniques to those who have had no prior background in discriminant analysis. The book covers three chapters on theory, applications, and computer program. The chapter on theory discusses general purposes of discriminant analysis, investigating group differences, classification procedures, and estimating classification errors-two-group case. The chapter on applications discusses distinctness of groups, effects of nonmultivariate normal variables, effects of equal versus unequal dispersions, effect of a priori probabilities in classification, influence of sample size, use of reduced space procedures, reducing the number of discriminant functions in k-Group linear problems, reducing the number of variables and determining the discriminating power of individual variables. The chapter on computer program discusses program summary, program output, modifications and system installation, and errors.
