Abstract: Universe: All establishments (approximately 345,000) employing one person or more primarily engaged in manufacturing as defined in the 1972 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual and its 1977 supplement. Industry-specific (approximately 450 industries) summary statistics for employment and payroll, shipments, cost of materials, value added, inventories, expenditures, assets, rents, depreciation and purchased services are provided. The statistics in this file are comparable to those found in tables 4-5 from the geographic area series reports and tables 1a, 3a-d, and 4 from the industry series reports. Geographic coverage: Data are provided for the U.S., States, and the District of Columbia, SMSA's, counties, and selected places (includes places with 450 manufacturing employees or more). Four files--size varies by file:

  • File 1 (Geographic Area).
  • File 2 (Industry-Table 1A).
  • File 3(Industry Table 3a-d).
  • File 4 (Industry Table 4).
